Document Summary
The rise of the new educated class. 3 forms of capital in bourdieu"s perspective: Accumulation of the thing is the primary basis of the class we just looked at: new money. Bourdieu ties it to legitimacy or the perceived right to exercise power among dominant groups. This is what old money families had. Distance from the market as justifications for their dominance. Similar to prestige or social honor in weber"s terms. Culture as a resource when there is a market which can confer advantages (material and power) on those who have the right kind. Long-lasting dispositions of the mind and body, learned through socialization. Signals something about the class position which is valued. Embedded in material objects like books, art, scientific instruments, etc. Owning and knowing how to appropriately use/appreciate/consume these objects. Financial capital + symbolic capital of legitimation (distance from the market means paternalistic benevolence for all society) = old money.
