All living things must have all of these components. Bacteria are the smallest cells ~0. 1-1. 0 micro meter in diameter. Cell volume is its need for nutrients and things to function correctly. Surface area of membrane is its ability to provide for those needs. Higher ratio of surface area to volume, the better able the cell is to supply its own needs. Larger cells have a harder time to supply its own needs because larger volume compared to surface area whereas smaller cells have an easier time with larger surface area to volume. Huge cell would eventually backup with waste and die. Volume increases to the cubed power and surface area increases to the square power. Long, thin parts like in nerve cells (dendrites increase surface area) Many small projections (villi with microvilli in digestive system increase surface area) Cells in digestive system are exchanging things that you have eaten.
