HDFS 28000 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Ascribed Status, Minority Group, Ingroups And Outgroups
Document Summary
Defining race: biological construction of race: group of people with common physical characteristics, research on genetic variation. Individuals assigned to different racial categories do not differ significantly at a biological level (lamanna & reidman, 2006) Greater variability within races than between races. Physical characteristics are largely adaptive: race refers to socially defined categories based upon physical characteristics such as skin color (sherif trask & hamon, 2007) Ethnicity: a socially defined category based on common ancestry, history, religion, language, or values. Minority group: a group that experiences a pattern of disadvantage or inequality: unequal treatment, distinguishing physical or cultural traits that are held in low regard, involuntary membership or ascribed status, group solidarity, patterns of in-group marriage.
