From conception to birth: period of zygote, period of embryo, period of fetus. Period of the zygote: begins with egg is fertilized in the fallopian tube, ends 2 weeks later when the zygote is implanted in the wall of the uterus. If it sticks, it is an embryo: three layers of cells (pluripotent, undifferentiated) (good test questions!, ectoderm: hair, skin, and nervous system, mesoderm: muscles, bones, and circulatory system, endoderm: digestive system, and lungs. Period of the fetus: from 9 weeks after conception to brith, highlights: increase in size, systems begin to function, age of viability: 22-29 weeks. And they can see too: but the view isn"t so great. Review: 1 week fertilized zygote makes a long trip, 3 weeks embedded zygote (called embryo) has attached and is developing rapidly . Teratogens: teratogen: any substance (agent) that causes abnormal prenatal development, diseases, drugs, environmental hazards.
