ANT-1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Sociocultural Evolution, Social Evolution, Evolutionism
Document Summary
A history of anthropology is by spencer. Progresses from simple forms to more complex forms: indigenous tribes to metropolis, you can rank them from simple to complex, evolution from simple to complex societies (spencer) 1859 darwin"s book origin species: interested in how plants and species have evolved and adapt to survive in different conditions. 1871 darwin"s book descent of man: about humans. Darwin took a lot of spencer"s ideas and try to merge them together in order to create a scale of how human beings evolve. Spencer was more respected at the time than darwin but now it"s the opposite. Darwin gets rid of the distinction that taxonomists believe that animals and humans are separate. Darwin believed that humans are one in the same with animals: animals can evolve into humans, humans can evolved into animals. Darwin links biological development and sociocultural development together in the origin of man.
