PSY-1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Elizabeth Loftus, Free Recall, Source Amnesia
Document Summary
Associations unconsciously activate related associations making certain responses more likely. Seeing/hearing the word rabbit makes it more likely to spell hair as hare. We remember things better if the info available when we learned it is also available at retrieval. Automatic encoding psychological state is similar to what it was when the memory formed. Some info enters ltm with little to no effort. Occur via emotional trigger, hormonal changes, and rehearsal. Feels as if its 100% accurate, however it still has inaccuracies. Better than most memories, but not perfect. What you see and hear after the fact can easily affect accuracy. First to doubt the accuracy of eyewitnesses. Have them tell the story without outside input. The longer you wait, the more inaccurate it will be. Will remember more while under hypnosis, but not as accurate. Only a slight relationship between confidence and accuracy. We update and revise memory without awareness. We put in basic facts and fill in later.
