Document Summary

Foucault: professor of the systems of history of thought. Post-structuralism (not identical to post-modernism although there is overlap) You need to look backwards at the previous histories to understand how we got here to the present. You need to excavate the past to see what got us to our current moment. It"s tied to a web of complex social and historical forces. In his genealogical analysis he is trying to denaturalize the present. Structuralism and phenomenology and existentialism are on other ends of the spectrum. The whole idea of a structure means you have some sort of phenomena with various parts to it. Thinks that human culture is just an expression of the structure of the human mind. He thinks that the mind of the savage and the mind of the people who consider themselves civilized are both structured the same way.
