Chapter 1: the role of statistic and the data analysis process. Statistics: the science of collection, assembling, organizing, analyzing and drawing conclusions from data. Data: individual facts that can be collected and made into info which can be used for decisions. Primary data: data you collect to address situation at hand. Secondary data: data collected for some other purpose that situation at hand. Cross-sectional data: data collected at one point in time. Time series data: data collected at several points in time. Why should one study stats??: to be informed, extract info, follow numerical arguments, to make informed judgments, to evaluate decisions that affect your life. Involves: using a sample to project the characteristics of an underlying population. Estimation, hypothesis testing, prediction: understand nature of the problem, decide what to measure and how to measure it, collect data, summarize data and perform preliminary analysis, perform formal analysis.
