Darwinian evolution: pre- darwinian ideas, aristotle 384-322 bce. Scala naturae (natural scale) & classification of species. Carolus linnaeus developed the concept of binomial nomenclature (two names) in the systema naturae (1735) Deeper down in rock strata he went, the more organisms differed from modern ones. Theory of catastrophism- at each rock layer a major catastrophe had occurred. Land forms by mechanisms that are currently operating in the world: charles lyell (1797-1875) The natural laws that operate now, have always been operating & continue to operate. Suggested that the world was older than 6000 years. Mountains are built by deposition & broken down by erosion. Lamarck hypothesized that species evolve through use & disuse of body parts & inheritance of acquired characteristics. Remember he could not know about mendel"s research, that was years later. Two mechanisms to explain change over time: use and disuse.
