Community = association of populations of species that live & interact in same place at same time. Example: crab carries a sea urchin (or jellies) on its back protection again predators (figure 54. 1) Study of interactions that determine distribution and abundance of individuals and populations in communities. Find patterns and processes common to wide variety of communities. Can be difficult because of many interactions between individuals & populations. Resource: anything from environment that meets need of a particular species. 3 main types: competition, predation (includes herbivory, symbiosis (parasitism, mutualism, and commensalism, competition. Competition = for same resource in short supply -/- interaction use by one decreases amount of available to others. Intraspecific competition between individual of same species. If an organism"s habitat is it"s address , the niche is the organism"s profession. Niche potentially occupied by that species potential used resources: realized niche. Niche actually occupied by that species resources actually used.
