Implications of EPOC
Optimal recovery depends upon type of exercise
Steady rate exercise
Little to no lactate accumulation
Use passive recovery- extra activity would only serve to elevate total
metabolism & delay recovery
Non steady rate exercise
Blood lactate will accumulate
Active recovery- will accelerate lactate removal
Working about 30-45% if cycling recover
Working about 55-60% if running to recover
Differences reflect localized muscular effort
RQ and RER/R
Respiratory Quotient(RQ):
Tells us what fuel is being used during rest and steady state aerobic exercise
RQ=CO2 produced/O2 consumed
RQ for carbohydrate=1.00
RQ for fat=.696
RQ for protein=.818
RQ- assume that oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide
production measured at mouth reflects activity in tissues
Respiratory Exchange ratio(RER or R)
Does not indicates fuels used- measured during non steady state
exercise, but still computed like RQ
Can be >1.0 due to hyperventilation and buffering of lactate w/ sodium
bicarbonate during high intensity exercise

Human Energy Expenditure During Rest and Physical Activity
Energy Expenditure At Rest
Total daily energy expenditure(TDEE):
Resting metabolic rate (60-75%)
Thermogenic effect of food consumed( about 10%)
Energy expended during PA and recovery(15-30%)
Basal metabolic rate
Energy to maintain vital functions in wake state
Measured in fasted state and no exercise
Resting metabolic rate
Energy to maintain vital functions plus digestion
Measure 3-4 hours following a meal, no prior exercise
Metabolism at Rest
Resting energy metabolism varies in proportion to the body's surface area
Resting metabolic rate (RMR) as a function of LBM provides best method for accounting
for intergender differences in energy expenditure
If looking at absolute values, women have 5-10% lower RMR than men
