1700s- images of white and grey matter. Terminal branches of axons make synapses on target cells. Electrical signal must be converted to a chemical signal by neurotransmitters at the synapse. Synapse takes a quite a bit of energy. Each nerve cell has one or two neurotransmitters. Each neurotransmitter belongs to a group of nerve cells. Nerve cells have many receptors that neurotransmitters can bind to. Drugs affect the recycling and reuptake of neurotransmitters, affect the amount of neurotransmitter is released (by binding to the receptor) 86 billion nerve cells in the brain. Born with open ended capacity for learning. Faster and sleeker brain after some synapses are removed.
