Seek to transform a convicted felon into a responsible and productive member of society. Success in outside world: meeting one"s needs, working for a living, earning good wage, self confidence, and holding prestige in the eyes of the community. Offender must be able to handle free choices and make law abiding decisions. Correctional officers have little training and are threatened by non punitive approach of treatment specialists. Goal is to help offender build self esteem, adjust, learn communication, and make different alternatives. Concerned with why people would be motivated to commit crimes. Characteristics of inmates without a goal-oriented behavior are helpless, alienated, and powerless. Internal is motivated to learn information related to achieving parole because they view the information as essential to achieving this goal. External perceives that obtaining parole is unrelated to their efforts, and sees little purpose. Help them accept and adjust aspects of environment. Small group of offenders meet with a leader.
