Document Summary

In neal shover"s book great pretenders , the concept of cultural capital is discussed to offer an explanation of why certain people become persistent thieves and career criminals. Cultural capital was defined in the book as general cultural background, knowledge, disposition and skill that are passed from one generation to the next . This means that it is the knowledge of society and its functions which one gains from their parents, peers and environment around them. Cultural capital is extremely different between socioeconomic classes however due to each class receiving a vastly different type and amount of cultural capital. This concept of cultural capital works for all socioeconomic classes but it specifically highlights the reasoning of why predominantly working class males turn to crime as a way of gaining an income rather than other legitimate opportunities. It is shown however that the majority of serious and persistent thieves come from the lower ends of the working class.
