Lecture 3: the second value axis: what we believe about the state. From the point of view of the individual, it makes sense to take as much as she can-especially because she assumes that everyone else is thinking the same way. Over the long term, the resulting behavior (overgrazing; overfishing) degrades the common resource (the pasture; the ocean)- and everyone is worse off. Some kind of overseer with police power. The modern (state): the structure and powers of government plus the laws. Non-governmental, non-profit organizations that have a presence in public life, expressing the interests and values of their members or others, based on ethical, cultural, political, scientific, religious, or philanthropic considerations. I. e. organize people for democratic participation, advocate for particular ethical/political views, provide social services, and resist government oppression.
