Document Summary

Found throughout the conduction portion of the tract. Mucus escalator - made up of cilia and transports mucus up towards the pharynx for swallowing and destruction of the stomach. Alveolar ducts - each alveoli has its own duct. Passageway that brings air into the alveoli and then takes the air out. Capillaries - up against each alveoli - blood is coming in. Type i alveolar cells - lining the alveoli. Type ii alveolar cells - producing surfactant - important for coating each alveoli. Alveolar macrophages - primary phagocytes of the innate immune system. Blood air barrier - alveolar cell layer. Co2 leaves the capillaries and enters the alveolar sacs. Oxygen leaves the alveolar sac and enters the capillaries. Pulmonary artery - taking blood to lungs. Pulmonary veins - oxygenated blood back to the heart. Visceral pleura - right up against the lungs. Parietal pleura - more outer lining - along the thoracic wall and superior aspect of the diaphragm.
