Document Summary

All organisms are composed of one or many cells for example, bacteria, protozoa, plants, animals, and humans. Cells contain an important molecule called dna (deoxyribonucleic acid). Each organism comes with its own unique set of dna instructions. These instructions dictate the chemical reactions that occur in the cell and the features of the organism. Today we will employ a simplified method for extracting dna. We will use household products in an effort to demystify this procedure. We will be extracting dna from a single strawberry. This procedure will provide a large quantity of dna that will be easy visible to the naked eye and able to be touched to feel the texture. Strawberries have been chosen for this extraction because they will eventually color the solution to be created making it easier to visualize what is occurring. Strawberries are easy to smash which is an important first step in the procedure.
