Session 9: managing a positive & productive work environment. 5 key steps for designing and managing a positive and productive work environment: Organizational structure: a formal system of task and reporting relationships that coordinates and motivates organizational members so they work together to achieve organizational goals. Many tasks require individuals to work with each other or with technology to create value. Work units make it easier to self-organize work. People in well-designed work units take initiative to work together to resolve problems and exploit opportunities necessary to create value. Some structures are more suitable for a given strategy: If innovation, then by multi-functional product teams; if optimizing steps then by function; if building product categories (like google is trying to do in book at end), then by product. This speeds up information flows and decisions: consists of interconnected layers where interactions occur.
