Heavy metal became more popular in the 1970s for the more intense rock music and became a genre of its own. The distortion in heavy metal music is dependant on the amplifier. Sound is very important to a genre and to a musician, because that is what helps it stand out from its peers and is the deciding factor if they will be successful or not. Many bands have been considered as the forefathers of metal. In their hit single you really got me they made the distorted sound popular and is recognized to be the precursor to this concept in heavy metal. First musician to use the term heavy metal" in his music. They adopted the sound of gothic metal" to set themselves apart from the rest. They used a lot of riff distortion and ozzy"s high pitched sound, plus the dark themes their music was about made them unique. They recorded their music with classical music.
