Personality: unique set of consistent emotional, cognitive, and behavioral dispositions/tendencies. Sigmund freud is a pioneer to try and explain how the brain works. Traits are the primary drives of people"s behaviors. Our behavior is controlled by what goes on in our unconscious mind. Concerned with drive satisfaction, provides the motive power; follows the pleasure principal. Necessary for survival and reproduction; hunger, thirst and sexual prowess. (unconscious) We are all born with the instinct to obliterate ourselves. Ego replaces redirects the death instinct to other people which explains aggression. Ego: rational thought; controls @ channels id; follows the reality principal. Part of the mind that satisfies id impulses to a certain degree. (most is unconscious) Superego: emerges at about 5-6; internalized parental control; much like a rigid, punitive, excessively strict conscience. Makes us feel guilty when we don"t satisfy id. Id wants instant gratification and the superego doesn"t like it, constantly at war!!!
