Document Summary
All three types of bipolar disorders involve manic or hypomanic episodes. Bipolar i: at least one manic episode (one week) Bipolar ii: at least one hypomanic episode, no full blown manic episode (4 days and does not disturb functioning) Cyclothymia: bipolar equivalent of (persistent depressive disorder) dysthymia-2 years. Must experience numerous hypomanic and depressive episodes during a two-year period. Just may think they have mood swings. Bipolar and schizophrenia come from the same place. In a manic state, symptoms are similar to schizophrenia. Depression and anxiety are more related to each other than bipolar and depression. Manic episode is a dysfunction in life. Onset usually occurs between ages of 18 and 22 years. First onset can be depression or mania. Average duration of a manic episode runs between two and three months. Different from depression, in which depression can be treated with therapy without medication. Must be on medication to control this.
