Group differences in timing of puberty: typically studied by comparing average age of menarche. Across countries: age at menarche lower when not malnourished (ex: africa and united. Among ses groups within a country: affluent girls reach menarche before disadvantaged girls. Within same populations but different eras (secular trend) Not really : what is the psychological effect of going through puberty early, early puberty is mildly related to some cancers. Psychosocial impact of pubertal events: most adolescents react positively to pubertal changes. Especially secondary sex characteristics: reactions to menarche are varied. But less negative than in the past. Less known about boys" reactions to first ejaculations: early or late maturation. Perception of being an early or late maturer is more important in affecting one"s feelings than the reality. Look older & more like men: tend to be more popular, tend to have better self esteem. Cons of early maturation: more precocious sexual activity, more drug & alcohol use.
