Escalation is often accomponed by changes in the cognitive pricesses involved in the act of drug taking. Drug taking becomes less decision based and more automatic. Drug taking occurs without thought, without conscous awareness of the intention to thke the drug. Drug taking becomes an automatic reflex, a well learned habit. Drug taking is triggered by cues associated witht the drugs effecta. Drug taking is excessive and poorly controlled.
