Loss of self control of drug taking. Repeated acts of drug taking lead to the loss of control of drug taking. There is a disconnect between action (taking the drug) and intention (to refrain from taking the drug) Self control is overwhelmed by the presence of cues associated with the drug"s rewarding effects. Drug taking is triggered by people, places, and things. Drug abuse is drug use plus in addition, automatic, reflexive acts of drug taking that are performed wihtout actuallt deciding to do it. Escalation is often accomponed by changes in the cognitive pricesses involved in the act of drug taking. Drug taking becomes less decision based and more automatic. Drug taking occurs without thought, without conscous awareness of the intention to thke the drug. Drug taking becomes an automatic reflex, a well learned habit. Drug taking is triggered by cues associated witht the drugs effecta. Drug taking is excessive and poorly controlled.
