Alcohol is produced by the fermentation of sugar by yeast spores. Alcohol has been used an intoxicant for over 40000 years. Excessive and compulsive alcohol sue is common place through the world. Alcohol related problems cost over 200 billion per year in us. This is more than the cost of all of the other abused drugs combined. Alcohol has been used as an intoxicant for over 4000 years. Approximately 10% to 15% of the adult population of the us suffers from problems related to alcohol use disorders. Alcohol has cns effects that influence many behaviors: Euphoria: positive emotional state, feelings of pleasure, sense of well being, enhanced sense of enjoyment. Intoxication: loss of motor coordination and muscle control. Muscle relaxation: reduction in muscle tension (anticonvulsant effect) Analgesia: reduction in sensitivity to pain due to an alteration in the subjective emotional reaction to painful stimulation. Sedative-hypnotic effect: a sleep like state of drowsiness and dreamlike detachment from surroundings.
