Notes below come from that documentary
Lesson on discrimination in 3rd grade class taught by the teacher
Use of prejudice, discrimination, stereotypes, and stereotype threat and self-fulfilling prophecy.
As a lesson, the teacher discriminated by eye color (first she said that blue eyes were smarter and
better than brown eyes)--> so brown eyes couldn’t use fountain--> resulted in the brown eye
students feeling sad, dehumanized, humiliated, hopeless, and like they lost their friends.
Fights erupted on playground between brown eyed and blue eyed childrenused brown-eyed as
an insult
Then the teacher reversed scenario (said brown eye students are better now)
Group that was “superior” that day performed better academically that day (vs. yesterday, when
they were called “inferior”, then it took them longer to do the activity)--> stereotype threat.
Once both sides faced prejudice and discrimination, they recognized how the other side felt and
learned that they shouldn’t judge othersfelt better when they were integrated once more.
Children learned that people should not be judged by their skin color or eye color (teacher tells
them to take this lesson in the real-world)
This documentary has been used at different places and it became called the Eye of the Storm.
As a result, the blue eyed people felt hopeless, powerlessness, wanted to retaliate
Implemented this kind of lesson to workshop for correction officersseparated brown eyes and
blue eyestargeted (discriminated against blue eyed peoplesaid they could not sit with the
brown-eyed people, said all blue eyed people do not listen to authority [generalized assumptions
of the group]--> after a test was given to both the brown eyed and blue eyed students to
complete, the teacher did not call the blue eyed students by their names (did not give them an
identity).
The teacher thinks this lesson should only be done properly
