Clearly rule of law does not penetrate into many private disputes where individuals define legit troubles for themselves. Self help also occurs in subculture of violence. Explains class differences in wm violence by saying that: Working and lower class more likely to define masculinity in terms of violence. Middle and upper class more likely to have non violent definitions of masculinity. Masculinity is defined in terms of leisure time roles, daring, pursuit of excitement, violent aggression. Violence is especially important for expressing masculinity for wm teens bc: Can express dominance and control in ways that are achievable. Wm teens may feel that masculinity is threatened b/c school requires unmanly behaviors. That"s why violence and jd become a way of doing oppositional masculinity. Wm oppositional masculinity vary by social class. Middle and upper class white male adolescents and oppositional masculinities. Affluent wm adolescents more willing to express an accommodating masculinity at school. White working class males and oppositional masculinity.
