That"s why it"s different from most theories of crime bc it"s not a motivational theory. Unlike motivational theories, control theories ask why don"t people do crime? . Assumes that everyone is motivated by crime. Only social controls or social bonds prevent them from becoming delinquent. How does he define social bonds or social controls. Hirschi measured the 4 elements of the bond and tested their impact on delinquency. Found that a weak social bond was associated with more delinquency. R"s who don"t care what parents think, r"s who don"t seek parents" opinions, r"s who don"t think parents know their location more crime. R"s who don"t like school, r"s who don"t like teachers more crime. R"s who make bad grades, r"s with low education aspirations, r"s with low occupation goals more crime. R"s who spend less time with homework , r"s who spend less time with extracurricular activities more crime.
