Document Summary

Intro to animal form and function (lecture 11) Higher sa:volume ratio allows more diffusion across a membrane (smaller sized) Why smaller animals don"t need complex systems. Surface area increases while volume is constant. Osmosis: water molecules move from an area of lower solute concentration to higher solute concentration. Hypotonic solution (lysed): very low salt concentrations + higher h2o concentration. Isotonic solution (normal): medium salt concentration + medium water concentration. Hypertonic solution (shriveled): high salt concentration +low h2o concentration. Epithelial tissue: purpose is for lining, secretion and absorption (ex. stomach lining) internally and externally. Connective tissue: purpose is for support, strength, and elasticity (layer after epithelial) Nervous tissue: sensory and communication purposes (usually the outer tissue of an organ) Regulators: animals that can maintain a constant internal temperature independent of external environment. Tend to occupy habitats with variable conditions. Disadvantages: expends a lot of energy to maintain constant internal conditions.
