Document Summary
Conceptions of psychopathology [the study of mental disorders] Medical model - the way you think about psychological disorders should be analogous to the way you think about medical issues. Categorical model - black/white, yes/no have it or you don(cid:495)t [common in medicine] Dimensional approach - everyone falls along a continuum [0-100] Biological processes, such as brain abnormalities or neurotransmitter problems. Physical stressors, relationship problems, trauma, abuse, neglect. Psychological disorders are a product of diathesis [nature] and environmental stressors. Comorbidity - co-occurrence of more than one disorder in the same person [2+, (cid:494)buffet(cid:495)] One diagnosis opens up more susceptibility for a second one. More disorders less likelihood for a good outcome from treatment. Generalized anxiety disorder - free floating, not specific, worry about whatever comes to mind. Phobias - intense, irrational fears of a specific object or situation. Panic disorder - panic attacks, physiological arousal, worried about having another attack.
