Document Summary

Encoding - process of acquiring information and transferring it to ltm. There area number of ways of encoding information into ltm, and some are more effected than others. Later information that has been placed into long-term memory needs to be accessed. Retrieval - process of transferring information form ltm into working memory. Successful retrieval depends a lot on how encoding was done. Craik and lockhart (1972): proposed that retention depends on "level"s of processing" Levels of processing - ability to remember information that you put into ltm depends on how deep the processing was at the time of encoding. Depth of processing can range from shallow to deep. Shallow processing - involves little attention to meaning (maintenance rehearsal) Deep processing - involves close attention, focusing on an item"s meaning and relating it to something else (elaborative rehearsal) Subjects were presented with a list of words and did one of three tasks: Subjects were then given a surprise memory test.
