ART 104 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Santa Barbara City College, Art History, Video Art
Document Summary
The history of art focuses on objects made for aesthetic purposes by humans in visual form. Visual art can be categorized in a variety of ways, such as distinguishing fine arts from applied arts; focusing on human creativity inclusively; or focusing on various media like architecture, sculpture, painting, animation, photography, and graphic arts. Technological advances in recent years have contributed to video art, digital art, performance art, music, film, and videogames. Art history is often spoken of as a chronology of masterpieces produced during every culture. Therefore, it can be described as a high-culture tale, epitomized by world wonders. On the other hand, expressions of vernacular art can also be incorporated into historical narratives of art, called folk arts or crafts. In the latter instances, items of art can be considered archeological artifacts. Historical research on art has two main concerns.
