PSY 100 Lecture 9: Psychology 100 - Lecture 9
Document Summary
Although there are serious limitations to both correlational and quasi- experimental research, experiments and longitudinal designs are not bad relations. Besides choosing a method that is appropriate for the problem, many practical concerns may influence the decision to use one method over another. Sometimes, we interview people even though it would be more accurate but much more difficult to follow them in duration. Especially in the case of exploratory study, opting for a cheaper and faster approach may make sense first. Instead, if findings from the initial study are positive, the researcher may use a more intensive approach to follow up. Beyond these practical concerns, the ethics of the analysis is another consideration when choosing a research design. For example, it would be immoral of researchers to inflict such impairments on healthy subjects in cases of brain injury or other neurological disorders. Nevertheless, none of these criteria could be abused ethically, and applied to people randomly.
