Document Summary
Gottfredson and hirschi: believe in more continuous behavior: age explains crime, age and propensity explains differences in crime, the propensity to commit crime is stable overtime. Absolute levels of self-control can change within persons. Relative rankings between persons will remain constant over the life. Low level of control = high self propensity. People with high propensity will never have more self control than these other individuals. the opportunities need to present themselves in order for the propensity to dissest. Need to be in a situation where there is an opportunity to commit crime. Causes of low self-control: (family implications: ineffective child-rearing: if child rearing methods are good (consistency, relationship, discipline, supervision, not cold or harsh). Not only just about child rearing : systems or institutions (i. e. , school): spend majority of time there. Parenting is still more important because even if the school attempts to create behaviors of self control and they aren"t enforced at home then they are not solidified.
