Well suited to the strengths of instruments not merely vocal music played by instruments: doctrine of affections. Served instrumental music by using devices found in vocal music: newly prominent violin family dominates the sound, harpsichord for basso continue, gradually added pairs of woodwinds, trumpets, timpani, french horns. Music for the court: rondeau from suite de symphonies. Johann pachelbel: known in his day as a prolific composer for harpsichord and organ. Canon is played by 3 violins all in the same range. Instrumental genre in which one or more soloists play with and against a larger orchestra. Tutti: everybody: 3 movements : fast slow fast, solo concerto continued to be cultivated during the classical and romantic period. Vivaldi: a virtuosi violinist/ composer, started as a priest. Nicknamed red priest because of his hair: most influential and prolific composer of baroque concerto.
