Performing arts- art forms in which artists use their voices and/ or the movement of their bodies, often in relation to other objects, to convey artistic expression. Include a variety of disciplines, but all are intended to be performed in front of a live audience. Classical period in greece- poets and plays by sophocles- including a dance component. Dark ages- no performing arts except for church. 17th century- opera is the performance of choice for the aristocrats. Triple the symphonies and chamber music companies. Non-profit organization- purposes are other than making a profit. Often dedicated to furthering a particular social cause or advocating for a particular. Pov. in this case, the arts/ cultural art scene in the community. Economically, a nonprofit uses its surpluses to achieve its purpose or mission, instead of distributing it as dividends. Donation from a company to a non-profit organization is tax-deductible. 500 institutionalized dance companies with paid staff, salaried dancers, and regular productions (2500 total)
