ZOOL 115 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Nucleolus, Osmosis, Phagocytosis
Document Summary
All living things are made of cells. The cell is the basic unit of structure and function in living things. It consists of: a nucleus: contains the genetic information, a cytoplasm fluid portion surround the nucleus, a cell membrane (or plasma membrane, a cell wall (plants only) Prokaryotic cell (noneukarytoic cells: are structurally simple, have very few organelles lack a nucleus; dna is not membrane bound include the domain eubacteria and archaea. Eukaryotic cells: structurally much more complex and larger, have a true nucleus and many membranous organelles, include cells of plants, fungi, animals, protozoa, and algae, include domain eucarya. Most cells are small so they can exchange materials with their environments. Prokaryotic cells=> smaller sizes; 1-2 micrometer in diameter. Exceptions to small size: 1) chicken egg, 2) some plant cells. In both examples, only a small portion of the cell is metabolically active. Cholesterol in the hydrophobic region of the membrane.
