Document Summary
American indians (or native americans) already had established civilizations in north. When the european newcomers arrived, they took much of what the american. Indians had and forced it towards their own economic advantage. With the arrival of european settlers came the arrival of many diseases that harmed the native americans. The weakened native americans could not resist the british settlers of the 17th century. American indians were harmonious with natural resources and this in turn influenced those of african and european descent. Popular american indian crops included corn, pumpkins, beans, squash, and tobacco. These foods became popular to the newcomers, those of african and european descent alike. In the southeast, british cultivated the indian crop, tobacco, to their own economic advantage. Tobacco cultivation directly led to the enslavement of africans. The indian canoe also became a way to transport africans and europeans. The spanish, french, and dutch all wanted to take part in the use of american indian labor.
