Rene descartes: 17th century, did works in science, physics, mathematics, and philosophy, meditations on first philosophy focuses on the distinction between the soul and the body and on the existence of god. Meditation 1: concerning those things that can be called into doubt. In plato"s works, human knowledge is compared to sight in the analogy of the cave. Color, name, identity, physical characteristics, etc: sensory error does not render doubtful the general facts, ex. In a dream, descartes says things seen are like painted images (15: the things seen can only be produced in the likeness of true things, ex. Indubitable fields of study = arithmetic, geometry, calculus, etc: because they are they"re own foundations. Descartes questions god: at the end of his first meditation, descartes considers an evil god, i will not suppose a supremely good god but rather an evil genius who has directed his power at deceiving me.
