It is characterized by a translocation of part of chromosome 22 to chromosome 9. The resulting chromosome 22 is short and called the philadelphia chromosome. The disease is a slow progressing blood cancer that begins in the bone marrow. The best treatment discovered for chronic myeloid leukemia is a drug therapy known as tyrosine kinase inhibitors. The treatment is highly effective and 85% of patients treated have survived within the last 5 years.
