Lecture 20- strategies to improve function of the damaged cns: spinal cord injury. Hematoma: damaged blood vessles can cause blood to collect below the dura. Neurometabolic cascade after concussion: too much calcium, big change of function of cells, cell death. Also the first symptoms are problems with judgment and reasoning rather than memory for which the problems develop later: very large ventricles, pink color, Hemorrhagic stroke- blood leaks into brain tissue. Ischemic stroke- blood flow is blocked by clot. Stroke: stroke is caused when brain tissue is deprived of oxygen due to hemorrhage or clot. Stroke patients adapt by learning to use different parts of the brain: brain is plastic. Spinal cord injuries: spinal cord contusion (most common)- a knock on the spinal cord; the vertebrae, spinal transection, tumors, vascular accidents. Role of activity in fine tuning synaptic connections during development.
