What"s the internet: a service view how can it produce coordinated effort? provides interface. Protocol "layers" only look at one piece of it at a time notion of modularity. Layered architecture people don"t need to know the details of a function; just the inputs and outputs; hide the implementation. Application layer hosts coordinate with each other ex: same program like chat program ex: different like web server and browser. Transport layer app layer you just decide which service, don"t need to think about implementation of it. Network layer which hops from machine to machine supply the ip address. Iso/osi reference model just added presentation and session layers to provide other types of services that may be missing. Status of osi model the other layers were never implemented you"d have to build it yourself bc no existing infrastructure.
