Document Summary
Two or more independently occurring words that combine to form a new word. In most english compounds, the right-most morpheme (head) determines the category of the the entire word. Compounds can be divided into two categories: endocentric and exocentric. Denotes a subtypes of the concept denoted by its head (ex. football is a type of ball) The meaning of the compound doesn"t follow the meaning of its parts (ex redneck is not a neck that is red) N + v (car wash, windsurf, spoon feed, etc) V + n (go-kart, row boat, jump rope, etc) Adj + n (blackboard, blueprint, longshot, etc) Prep + n (outhouse, in-crowd, overhead, etc) Compounds can be written as a single word, hyphenated word, or separate words. Compounds stress the first element while non compounds stress the second element. If the first element is an adj, the adj can"t be preceded by very in compounds (ex. can"t say very blackboard )
