PSY 103 Lecture 5: Biology, Evolution, Brain II, 2.14.17
Document Summary
Brainstem: medulla (breathing, heartbeat, reticular formation (consciousness) Cerebellum (balance, fine motor movement, simple associative learning) Amygdala (aggression, emotional memory: if damaged, you may lose fear response, hormones have a major influence: oxytocin (love hormone), increases trust and social bonding, but also causes distrust of out-groups (free-will???). Makes you behave warmly towards inner circle but less warm to other groups of strangers. Hippocampus (memory formation: the case of h. m. - dr. scoville drilled into a head and sucked vital parts of brain out. Hm had head trauma that severely disabled him (seizures), went to scoville for help, partial lobotomies were popular at this time. Scoville removed hippocampus and seizures disappeared and his emotion was same, but he lost memories and could not form new ones. This helped to determine many of the functions of the hippocampus. Scoville still had short term memory but anything over about 20 min was gone from his brain.
