Document Summary
Parental disciplinary efforts can result in explosive conflict. Risk for addiction occurs well before the onset of actual use. Individual differences in emotional coping and behavior regulation in childhood; and externalizing behavior in early adolescence are risk factors of substance abuse in late adolescence. Children that are described as uncontrollable at age 3 and 4 are more likely to use drugs. Disruptiveness in elementary school is related to early use of drugs. Impulsivity and aggression were significantly associated with marijuana use. Boys reported higher impulsivity and more frequent use of marijuana than girls. Impulsivity and lack of planning were only associated with frequency of use among girls, with moderate female users reporting higher levels of these personality characteristics than infrequent users. Exposure to common family problems during childhood and early adolescence affects brain development, which could lead to mental health issues in later life.
