Interference (but good: can prevent confusion) attention to) Misattribution to wrong source (but confusions often sensible) Suggestibility (but reflects our tendency to integrate info) Persistent recall of disturbing events (but helps to avoid later) On top of all this, people don"t know how to optimally use the exquisite machinery. Influence of prior knowledge (but usually helpful) they"ve been blessed with. A user"s guide to improving learning and memory. Subliminal learning is not a good strategy. Listening to lectures as you sleep won"t improve your grades (no more than tuning out the prof while on. There"s no miracle drug/food to supercharge your memory (but maintain a healthy lifestyle for basic brain functioning). Build in different forms of encoding variability. Spend some of your study time strategizing about what to focus on.
