Unexpected costs of high working memory capacity following directed forgetting and. Wm capacity may involve both activation of relevant information & suppression of irrelevant information. High-capacity people may be better able than low- capacity people to identify value and act on it appropriately. Memory is often influenced by contextual cues (internal and/or external contexts). Maybe high-wmers" superiority comes in part from being better at controlling internal context. Condition 2: told it was practice; no need to remember. People told to remember remembered more of the total words than people who told to forget. High-wmers are better at directing their attention. So might have lower memory for list they were instructed to forget . High-wmers will weather context change better when told to remember than will low-wmers, because high-wmers control their own internal context better. For the same reason, high-wmers will forget better when instructed to than will low-wmers. List 1 and list 2 each have 15 words.
