In a 2011 a gallup poll was taken among americans asking what do you think the most important problem facing the country today. Their answers included the economy, war, health care, government corruption, poverty, crime, Awareness of social conditions through life experiences and through reports in the media. We see the homeless, hear gunfire in the street, and see battered women in hospital emergency rooms. We read and hear about employees losing their jobs and businesses downsize and factories close. The media provide access to and contruct social problems for large numbers of audiences tht influence our perception of social problems. Most would agree that some or all of these social conditions are problems. Sociologists distinguish between personal troubles and public issues. According to the textbook: a social problem is a social condition that a segment of society views as harmful to members of society views as harmful to members of society and in need or remedy.
