Theory is characterized by disagreement and debate, different lenses see different theories in different ways. Realism focuses on state power in an anarchic world where insecurity is high , sees power as main determinant of outcomes, sees pursuit of power the main determinant of policies. Liberalism is concerned with purpose and power. Paradigm = a theoretical approach that includes one or more theories that share similar philosophical assumptions. Five paradigms: realism, liberalism, economic structuralism(marxism), constructivism, and feminism. Anarchy ( no world government to rule over the states ) States as the central actors (no party interests, no personal agendas, no political infighting) - (clear national interests, coordinated decision making, coherent foreign polices) States as unitary actors (military power/capabilities on air, land, and sea) States as rational actors (preference ranking(what do you value most) and cost-benefit calculations) 4 main tenets: anarchy, soveirgnty (national interest, military power, rationality.
