Various generations of islamists: pre wwi, post ottoman 1924, cold war: post wwii, post cold war 1990s now. Trying to strengthen islam in face of weakness. Period when islam was international power in form of ottoman empire. Before wwi there were only two nations in middle east. Ottomans won most battles, persian shiites persecuted in sunni empire and vice versa. With western civilization and technology, there was a feeling of competition. Ottomans had to empower themselves, use new military technology. Pan islamism: wanted to keep traditional islamism but had to adopt some western innovations in order to modernize. Two famous writers in this period: m. abdwh and r. rida. Asserting itself from a position of weakness, collapse of ottoman empire. Replaced by shaky and weak republic of constantinople, becomes ally of west. Remaining middle eastern regions redrew boarders for protection under power of. French (i. e. syria, lebanon) and british (iraq, palestine)
