Major obstacles against islamism as an ideological project. Islamism is not confined to violent jihadi islamic movements. Islamism as a political ideology is not a recent development. There have been at least four generations of islamism that depend on political developments. Like any other ideology, groups evolve and change. Islamism in the 20th century was rising to combat capitalism and democracy. Western influence in the form of capitalist democracy versus soviet union. Perhaps if it had succeeded in obtaining some objectives, it would not have been as violent. Like all ideologies, the ideology of islam was to create a new world under islam. We are not free creatures choosing what we have, but we follow discourses and ideologies of our times and these create different norms, values and psychologies. Islamism as a variation of islam was trying to achieve rivaling ideology to western values.
